Caligari (I919) is a work of art which (like architecture) was built to accommodate movement in three dimensions, but (like a painting) appears in the at on the screen. With its painted décor and daubcd-on faces, Weine‘s The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is half-way to being a cartoon. In one scene, the somnambulist Cesare (Conrad Veidt) carries the heroine (Lil Dagover) away along a painted path. The perspective of the path is subtly foreshortened, so that Cesare scuttles from foreground to horizon in three strides at, giving an effect of nightmare speed.
