Just at this point the throne was occupied by a succession of weak princes, who were incapable of handling the situation, and the country was plunged into civil war. It was against the background of these events that Bodin developed his political theory. It was natural for him to insist that the times required a single authority in the state, powerful enough to bring all the divisive elements into order. This authority, which Bodin called "sovereignty," occupied the central position in his thought.

Two of the most important of these are the closely connected ideas of nationalism and of sovereignty. A third involves not so much a change in content as a change in attitude toward the phenomena of politics. This new attitude 13 14 RENAISSANCE has been variously called "naturalism" (to contrast it with the ethical and religious perspective from which the Middle Ages had studied politics), "positivism" (to emphasize its empirical and secular point of view), and "realism" (to bring out its rejection of the idealistic tendencies of traditional political theory).

For if we consider an individual man, we shall see that this is tme of him; since whereas all his faculties are ordained for felicity, the intellectual faculty is the guide and ruler of all the others, else he cannot attain to felicity. If we consider the family, the goal of which is to prepare its members to live well, there must needs be one to guide and rule whom they call the pater-familias, or his representative. . And if we consider a city, the end of which is to live well and suitably, there must be a single rule.
