Before the end of 1863, Grant led his Union troops to major battle victories in Tennessee and Georgia. Such losses took a heavy toll on the morale and the military of the Confederates. The Gettysburg Address and the Purpose of the War On November 19, 1863, 15,000 people gathered near the site of the Battle of Gettysburg for ceremonies dedicating the battlefield, where so many had died, as a Soldiers’ National Cemetery. President Lincoln delivered a brief but very important speech, known as the Gettysburg Address.
Lincoln’s name was placed in nomination for vice president in 1856. Although the delegates did not choose him, the 1856 convention made Lincoln’s name familiar to national Republican Party members, and it was clear that many Republicans considered him a potential leader.
