Angel means ‘messenger’ and in Biblical terms this is their primary function. But in their essential incorporeal form angels have other purposes. These include: ● ● Intellect and love. As God is pure intelligence angels are the closest beings to share in this intelligence. Angels therefore set an example to humans of what it means to love, know and serve God. Evil is not a condition of existence. Before the Fall of humans, the fall of the invisible non-corporeal world occurred when the angel Satan, through his own free will, rebelled against God’s will.
Prior to the Big Bang, then there is no necessity even to consider a ‘mind of God’ other than the conditions which made this universe possible. Those who have argued along the lines suggested by Aquinas that God is the first cause and initiator of the Big Bang, now find themselves rescuing God to ‘fill the gap’ left by physicists and then find that the ‘gap’ has been filled by more recent scientific explanation. Some theologians have argued that maybe Aquinas’ insistence on creation ex nihilo needs to be revised.
Iii) Formal cause of humans The intellectual soul as organising principle is, as we have observed, the first principle of the body and enables humans to know God in a limited way. The human intellectual formal cause also distinguishes humans from angels because, unlike angels, humans are able to organise matter. In biblical terms, as God’s stewards (Genesis 1:28), humans are there to maintain creation and order it according to God’s will. iv) Final cause of humans But the final state of humans is after death when the soul is reunited with its body (now transformed by God) and is able to know God and see him face to face.
