There were, as we may learn from the close study of the historical record, antislavery factions in the South, though of course in the minority, and proslavery factions in the North. This general division of public opinion, still existing today and tending more and more to divorce itself from regional traditions and geographical boundaries is, in my opinion, the most characteristic and hopeful fact of our national situation about race.
Modern views in fact consider the cultural influence as a double reciprocal process that is not only top down, but also bottom up.
